Its title meant as a response to Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ album released six months before, Sly & The Family Stone’s 1971 masterpiece ‘There’s A Riot Goin’ On’ has always been heralded as one of the very greatest albums of all time. Shifting away from the psychedelic soul of previous records and embracing a more strident political vibe, it spawned the massive hit single ‘Family Affair’.
