Muse draws on gospel, doo-wop, soul, standards, Afrobeat and hip-hop, while combining orchestral and cinematic elements with contemporary production. Legend said he wanted to move beyond the piano-driven ballads most closely associated with his career: “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.”
Across the album, the title track follows a fictional relationship between a man and his muse, while “Her” draws on doo-wop and gospel. “Get Back,” featuring Pharrell, uses horns and strings, and “Bodies on the Floor,” features Clipse. Legend said the sessions also involved an unusual degree of creative trust for him: “I recorded some songs on this album that [Pharrell] fully wrote, which I almost never do.”
