A cult classic in underground hip-hop, The Cenobites brings together Kool Keith and producer Godfather Don for a raw, jazz-laced collaboration that helped define the indie rap sound of the late '90s. Born in the shadows of 1990s Brooklyn and originally released on Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle 'Em Records, the project evolved into a dark, hypnotic album that pushed the boundaries of underground hip-hop.
Originally released as an EP in 1995 and expanded into a full-length LP in 1997—with a bonus cut added in 2000 The Cenobites LP features gritty tracks with abstract lyricism, surreal sci-fi imagery, and jazz-infused, unconventional beats. Highlights include Kool Keith’s high-pitched, experimental flow (under his Rhythm X alias) and Godfather Don’s distinctive production, marked by heavy horn samples and hard-hitting drums.
